‘1600 Pennsylvania Avenue: 95 Years, 16 Presidents’ will remain on display through Feb. 2, 2017. Members of the WHNPA have covered every aspect of our nation’s highest office – from President Warren Harding to the campaign of Donald Trump – and created images that have left an indelible mark on history. The images selected for the exhibition include seldom seen photographs taken by members of the White House News Photographers Association.
The images include President John F. Kennedy having breakfast with his young daughter Caroline in the White House; President Harry Truman leading exercise on a Navy ship; and Barack Obama waiting just inside the U.S. Capitol before taking the oath of office just before his inauguration in 2009. The photos showcase our nation’s leader through the years, and demonstrate how WHNPA members serve as ‘The Eyes of History. ®’
WHNPA supports photojournalists in the work to chronicle events from the White House, Capitol and beyond. The association helps to negotiate access to government events to maintain a visual record of history. Regardless of the medium – print, video or multimedia – people around the world depend on our members for accurate and responsible coverage.
WHNPA president Whitney Shefte said, “As our members prepare to document a new presidential administration, it’s important to reflect on the remarkable work done covering presidents past. We are so pleased to present this display of work that spans decades of coverage of our nation’s presidents.”
Heidi Elswick, Executive Director of the WHNPA said, “Our members have a daily front seat to history, and as an association, we owe it to future generations to preserve history with accuracy. It is our constitutional mandate for freedom of the press.”
