(WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 12, 2021) – The White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA) announced that Carol Guzy is being presented with the 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award.
Guzy began her photojournalism career in 1980 at The Miami Herald. During her eight years at the Herald, she was awarded her first two Pulitzer Prizes. In 1988 she began a storied career in Washington, as a staff photographer at The Washington Post and traveled extensively, earning two additional Pulitzers – the first journalist to do so. Guzy and her work has been honored with numerous awards including eight times as WHNPA Photographer of the Year, three times as NPPA Photographer of the Year, the Robert Capa Gold Medal in 2018 and the Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in the Media in 2019. She is currently a freelancer and continues her work on long-form documentary human interest projects, news and feature stories.
Some of the notable assignments Guzy covered have been in Kosovo, the 2010 Haitian earthquake and the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy. Guzy is also a member of the WHNPA board, serves on the association’s 100 Years History Project committee, and has been active in the association’s programming and exhibit committees.
When told of the honor, Guzy said, “Heartfelt thanks to the WHNPA for this profound honor. It means the world to me for so many reasons. Looking forward to celebrating the association’s 100th anniversary milestone with everyone as we emerge from the shadows of the pandemic into the light!”
