The White House News Photographers Association® announced that they will present Scott Applewhite, a photographer with the Associated Press with the association’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2017 ‘Eyes of History®’ annual awards gala Saturday, June 10, 2017, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Washington, DC.
Applewhite is the recipient of two Pulitzer Prizes. His primary beat for three decades has been the White House where he’s covered six presidents — Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump. Applewhite said as he was told, “This comes as a huge surprise and I am really humbled by the award.”
In commenting on the selection, Whitney Shefte, WHNPA president said: “It was never a matter of if Scott Applewhite would win WHNPA’s Lifetime Achievement Award, it was just a matter of when. WHNPA’s board is so pleased to honor Applewhite with our very highest award. Scott has had such a storied career, capturing some of the most historic moments in politics over the past decades. This award is so well deserved.”
Applewhite’s assignments have taken him far from politics and presidents: wars in the Middle East and the Desert Storm conflict, the Balkans, the invasion of Panama, the anguish of Somalia and Haiti. His expertise at getting into and filing from some of the world’s most difficult datelines has made him one of AP’s busiest photojournalists.
J. David Ake, Washington Assistant Bureau Chief for The Associated Press said: “Scotty has been a force, mentor and gentleman in Washington for over 30 years. We look forward to celebrating the magnificent career of our friend and colleague in June.”
The top winners of the still, video, multimedia and student contests will be honored at the annual ‘Eyes of History®’ gala on June 10, 2017, at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington. The black-tie event celebrates all the winning photojournalists and the President of the United States. Nearly 1,000 guests, including government dignitaries and industry celebrities, attend.
The White House News Photographers Association is a 96-year-old non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the efforts of Washington’s professional photojournalists. The WHNPA aims to provide professional and educational outreach to its members and the community through scholarships, programming, an annual competition and a celebration of the industry at the annual ‘Eyes of History®’ gala.
