Exhibit Features Images From First-ever National Political Photo Competition
The White House News Photographers Association and the Carroll Square Gallery announce the opening of the exhibit: White House News Photographers Association: National Eyes of History 2013 on Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, with a reception from 6:00–8:00pm. The exhibition will remain on view through Nov. 22, 2013.
The Carroll Square Gallery and the WHNPA are pleased to present the winners of the first ever White House News Photographers Association’s national political photography contest. Professional photojournalists from across the country were invited to compete in eight single image and picture story categories that covered the spectrum of local, state and national politics.
Contest judges, Pulitzer-Prize winning photojournalist David Hume Kennerly, Jeff J. Mitchell of Getty Images and Stokes Young of NBC News, deliberated via Internet conference from their respective home bases in California, Scotland and New York to select a group of award winning photographs. First place, second place, third place and awards of excellence were granted in each category, with winners representing states all across the country. The judges unanimously and emphatically selected Brooks Kraft’s photograph of President Barack Obama campaigning in a rainstorm as Best in Show and first place in the Political Portrait category.
The White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA) is a 92-year-old non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the efforts of Washington’s professional photojournalists. The WHNPA aims to provide professional and educational outreach to its members and the community through scholarships, programming, an annual competition and a celebration of the industry at the annual Eyes of History gala.
