Diana Walker Selected as the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient

(WASHINGTON, D.C. – April 16, 2023) – The White House News Photographers Association® has announced that they will present Diana Walker, a photographer with TIME magazine, with the association’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2023 ‘Eyes of History®’ annual awards gala which will be held on June 17, 2023 in Washington.

Walker, known for her work covering the White House for TIME magazine from 1984-2004, where she first began working as a contract photographer in1979. Walker is the author of three books, Public & Private: Twenty Years Photographing the Presidency, The Bigger Picture: 30 Years of Portraits and Hillary: The Photographs of Diana Walker – which chronicled Hillary Clinton as she moved from first lady to senator to presidential candidate and later as Secretary of State.

Walker has received numerous awards throughout her incredible career, including from World Press, National Portrait Gallery’s Paul Peck Award, NPPA, the Henry Luce Life Achievement Award from Time Inc., in 2012 and the WHNPA. Walker’s work is featured at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and National Museum of American History. She is represented by the Addison Ripley Gallery in Washington and the Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York City.

When told about being named the WHNPA’s 2023 recipient, Walker said: “I am very happy to receive this award. Pleasing one’s editors is one thing; pleasing your colleagues is another! I am very glad to be remembered by the photographers of the WHNPA. I love this kind of recognition and I loved my wonderful job! The work, the presidents, the people, and you all, my colleagues. I salute all of you and the wonderful work you do, day in and day out. Thank you.”

Whitney Shefte, WHNPA president, commented, “The board is incredibly pleased to honor Diana Walker with our Lifetime Achievement Award. Diana, who has been a longtime member and friend of WHNPA, has had a remarkable career covering the halls of power — and at a time when few women were able to break through in this industry. She’s an inspiration to us all.”

Walker’s archive is housed at the Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas in Austin.

The top winners of the still, broadcast, digital storytelling and student contests will be honored at the annual ‘Eyes of History®’ gala to be held on June 17, 2023, in Washington. The black-tie event celebrates all the winning photojournalists and the President of the United States. Hundreds of guests, including government dignitaries and industry celebrities, attend.

The White House News Photographers Association is a 102-year-old non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the efforts of Washington’s professional visual journalists. The WHNPA aims to provide professional and educational outreach to its members and the community through scholarships, programming, an annual competition, and a celebration of the industry at the annual ‘Eyes of History®’ gala.
