(WASHINGTON, D.C. – Feb. 19, 2023) – The White House News Photographers Association® announced the winners of the Digital Storytelling categories in the annual ‘Eyes of History®’ competition.
Whitney Shefte of The Washington Post was named WHNPA 2023 Multimedia Visual Journalist of the Year.
The judges for the Digital Storytelling competition were Yara Bishara, NBC News, Jon Baugher, Eastward Films and Lauren Frohne, The Seattle Times.
Whitney was able to capture an important moment in history beautifully and emotionally. Bishara said she hadn’t seen such intimate storytelling of the conflict.
When told of her win, Whitney said: “I feel so honored to have been able to share the stories of ordinary Ukrainians who have faced such incomprehensible loss and heartbreak due to this senseless war. I hope this award, along with the collective work of my colleagues, helps to bring greater attention to their suffering so that the conflict can finally be put to a stop.”
“Congratulations to Whitney for such breadth and intimate video portraits from her time covering the war in Ukraine” said WHNPA digital storytelling contest chair Pierre Kattar.
The top winners of the still, video, digital and student contests will be honored at the annual ‘Eyes of History®’ gala later this year in Washington. The black-tie event celebrates all the winning visual journalists. The WHNPA is celebrating its 102nd anniversary in 2023.
