Long time White House News Photographers Association member Jim Wallace died peacefully on June 14, 2020 in Melbourne, Florida at age 77. He is survived by his wife Jolleen, a son James Wallace III, and a daughter Maris Keiter.
Jim was Director of Curator and Photographic Services at the Smithsonian Institution for 29 years, where he authored several publications on photography, many dealing with his expertise in archival preservation of photographic materials. He was very proud of his timely photography book Courage in the Moment: The Civil Rights Struggle, 1961-1964.
Jim served for several years as Vice Chairman of the NPC Photography Committee, and taught various aspects of photography as the club entered the digital world. He earned Vivian Awards for his outstanding service to the Press Club. He spent his final years in retirement in Florida enjoying photographing Everglade wildlife and local birds along with his wife. Several of these outstanding photographs often appeared in the Press Club’s Annual Photography Exhibitions.
