(WASHINGTON, D.C. – Feb. 27, 2021) – The White House News Photographers Association® announced that Jacob Moscovitch of the University of Missouri has been named the WHNPA Student Still Photographer of the Year, and in the seventh year of the student video division, Nash Consing of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been named the WHNPA Student Video Photographer of the Year in the 2021 WHNPA ‘Eyes of History®’ student contest judging on Feb. 27, 2021, that was conducted virtually because of the ongoing pandemic.
Additionally, Shafkat Anowar of the University of Hawaii was awarded an award of excellence in the Student Still Photography division. Full results are available on the WHNPA website at www.whnpa.org.
The judges for the WHNPA 2021 ‘Eyes of History ’ Student still photography competition were: Caroline Brehman of Roll Call, Tom Brenner of Reuters, and Jessica Koscielniak of McClatchy. The video judges were Beth Brown of WRC-TV, Brian Hopkins of WJLA-TV, Alice Li of The Washington Post and Nate Luna of ABC News.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by WHNPA. Listening to the judges discuss my project ‘Holding Imma’ was unreal. Documenting my mother’s grieving process amid the pandemic taught me the power of visual storytelling. There were so many strong portfolios and it’s exciting to see the future of photojournalism.” said Moscovitch.
When told about his win by Student Video Chair Bethany Swain, Consing said “I’m glad I had the opportunity to do the piece. It was very personal to me. It means everything considering the situation we’ve all had to endure.” Consing’s piece was a self-reflective documentary that follows Consing from his personal perspective as he grapples with the most unprecedented eras of recent history. “Your story was the standout piece of the day,” said Luna to Consing on the call. “We are happy to award you this high honor and we are all taking some inspiration away from you.”
The student video contest also honored work created by students from University of Maryland, Michigan State, Syracuse and University of North Texas in the largest collection of entries since the student video contest began.

Jacob Moscovitch and Nash Consing will be honored at the ‘Eyes of History® ’ gala. The top winners of the still, video, digital and student contests will be honored at the annual ‘Eyes of History®’ gala later this year in Washington. The black-tie event celebrates all the winning visual journalists. The WHNPA is celebrating its 100 anniversary in 2021.
The White House News Photographers Association is a 100-year-old non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the efforts of Washington’s professional visual journalists.
