2018 Multimedia Award Winners Announced

The White House News Photographers Association® announced the winners of the Multimedia categories in the annual ‘Eyes of History®’ competition. Alice Li of The Washington Post won Multimedia Journalist of the Year.

A team from NPR took first place for news story for What democracy looks like: A portrait of Inauguration weekend and in the documentary category for Eclipse 2017: One nation under the sun. Whitney Shefte won first place in features for Super Awesome Sylvia was a role to girls in science. But then Sylvia became someone else. Whitney Leaming and Jorge Ribas won first in issue reporting for She thinks illegal immigrants are draining the system. What about the family next door? Jessica Koscielniak won first place in sports for Hope and a back handspring. Adam Cole won first place in explainer for What would we lose if we wiped out vampire bats?, as well as a first in explainer for How eclipses changed history. And a team from The Washington Post won the multimedia package for Sin Luz: Life without power.

Bianca Consunji of Buzzfeed, Catherine Spangler of The New Yorker and Margaret Cheatham Williams of The New York Times served as this year’s judges for the Multimedia competition.

“The WHNPA is so pleased with the judging of the multimedia contest this year,” said WHNPA president Whitney Shefte. “We are excited to honor Alice Li for her excellent body of work.”

The still, video and student competitions were also held at the National Geographic Society over the weekend.

The top winners of the still, video, multimedia and student contests will be honored at the annual ‘Eyes of History®’ gala on June 16, 2018, at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington. The black-tie event celebrates all the winning photojournalists and the President of the United States. Nearly 1,000 guests, including government dignitaries and industry celebrities, attend.

The White House News Photographers Association is a 97-year-old non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the efforts of Washington’s professional photojournalists. The WHNPA aims to provide professional and educational outreach to its members and the community through scholarships, programming, an annual competition and a celebration of the industry at the annual “Eyes of History®” gala.
